Voters approved a new constitution expanding presidential powers by roughly 70% to 30% in an 30 August referendum called by the military junta that seized power in a November 2025 coup. The main opposition party, PAIGC, boycotted the vote. The referendum precedes presidential and legislative elections scheduled for 6 December 2026, which had not yet taken place as of this writing.
